How Many Ayahuasca Ceremonies Should You Do?

How Many Ayahuasca Ceremonies Should You Do?

If you are planning your first ayahuasca retreat in Colombia, one of the most common questions is:

How many ayahuasca ceremonies should I do?

Should you start with one ceremony? Is two better? Should you participate in several ceremonies over a few days?

There is no single answer that applies to everyone. Ayahuasca can be an intense physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual experience, and the right number of ceremonies depends on your intentions, previous experience, individual circumstances, and how you respond to the medicine.

For many first-time participants, the most important thing is not to focus on doing as many ceremonies as possible, but on giving yourself enough time to experience, process, and integrate what happens.

Is One Ayahuasca Ceremony Enough?

For some people, one ceremony can be a profound experience.

A single ceremony may bring up emotions, memories, personal insights, questions, or perspectives that continue to develop after the ceremony has ended.

You may not immediately understand everything you experience.

In fact, some people find that the meaning of their experience becomes clearer in the days or weeks afterward.

This is why it is important not to measure an ayahuasca experience simply by its intensity.

A powerful experience is not necessarily a complete experience.

Sometimes, the most important part begins after the ceremony.

Should You Do Two Ayahuasca Ceremonies?

A two-ceremony retreat can allow participants to approach the experience with more time and intention.

The first ceremony may introduce you to the medicine and help you understand how your body and mind respond.

The following experience may feel different because you already know what to expect.

However, this does not mean that a second ceremony will automatically be deeper, stronger, or more beneficial.

Every experience is different.

Some people may feel ready for another ceremony relatively soon, while others may need more time to rest and process what they experienced.

What About Three Ayahuasca Ceremonies?

Three ceremonies can represent a significant commitment, particularly for someone who is new to ayahuasca.

Rather than thinking:

“More ceremonies = better results,”

it may be more useful to think:

“What can I realistically integrate from this experience?”

Ayahuasca can involve intense physical and psychological effects. Nausea and vomiting are among the most frequently reported acute effects, and challenging psychological experiences can also occur.

For that reason, responsible ceremonial settings should prioritize preparation, supervision, personal assessment, and integration rather than simply encouraging participants to consume more.

How Long Should You Wait Between Ayahuasca Ceremonies?

There is no scientifically established universal waiting period that applies to everyone.

The appropriate spacing depends on factors such as:

  • Your previous experience with ayahuasca

  • How intense your previous ceremony was

  • Your physical condition

  • Your emotional state

  • Your ability to sleep and recover

  • Any medications or medical conditions

  • Your intention for participating

  • The quality of support and supervision available

If you have just experienced an especially intense ceremony, taking additional time for rest and integration may be more appropriate than immediately seeking another intense experience.

Why Integration Is More Important Than the Number of Ceremonies

One of the biggest misconceptions about ayahuasca is that the ceremony itself is the entire process.

It isn’t.

Integration is the process of reflecting on your experience and considering how its insights may relate to your everyday life.

You might ask yourself:

What did I experience?

What emotions came up?

What did I learn about myself?

Is there something in my life that I want to change?

How can I turn an insight into an action?

Research into ayahuasca experiences suggests that the ceremonial context and the level of support can influence outcomes, including self-insight, spiritual experiences, fear, and integration difficulties.

This is why a well-supported ceremony should not be viewed simply as an isolated event.

Is Ayahuasca Stronger If You Drink It More Often?

Not necessarily.

The intensity of an experience can vary considerably from one ceremony to another.

It can depend on the preparation, the individual, the ceremonial environment, the person’s physical and emotional state, and the characteristics of the ayahuasca preparation.

Scientific research also shows that our understanding of the complex interactions between the compounds in ayahuasca is still incomplete.

Therefore, increasing the number of ceremonies should never be treated as a guarantee of a deeper or more meaningful experience.

Your First Ayahuasca Retreat: One, Two, or Three Days?

If you are traveling to Colombia from another country, you may be wondering which type of retreat is appropriate.

One-day experience

A one-day experience may be appropriate for someone who wants an introduction to traditional ayahuasca in a supervised ceremonial environment.

It can also be a good option for experienced participants who already understand how they respond to the medicine.

Two-day experience

A two-day experience provides more time for the process.

Instead of arriving, participating, and immediately returning to your normal routine, you have additional time for rest, reflection, and integration.

For first-time international visitors, this can be particularly valuable because the retreat becomes more than just the ceremony itself.

Three-day experience

A three-day retreat may provide an even more immersive experience, but more time does not automatically mean better results.

The goal should always be quality, preparation, safety, and integration—not simply increasing the number of ceremonies.

What About Doing Ceremonies on Consecutive Days?

This is where individual assessment becomes particularly important.

Some traditional retreat settings organize ceremonies over consecutive days, while others leave more time between experiences.

There is no universal scientific rule stating that everyone should participate on consecutive days or that everyone should avoid doing so.

If ceremonies are scheduled close together, participants should have appropriate supervision, adequate rest, hydration, nutrition, and a clear understanding of what they may experience.

Most importantly, participants should be able to choose not to participate in another ceremony if they do not feel ready.

Ayahuasca and Medications: An Important Consideration

Before deciding how many ceremonies to attend, you should consider something even more important:

Are you medically and psychologically appropriate for an ayahuasca ceremony?

Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline compounds that inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO), which is one reason why interactions with certain medications and substances require particular attention.

Some combinations may present significant risks, particularly with medications or substances that affect serotonin or monoamine pathways.

Never stop or change prescribed medication on your own in order to participate in an ayahuasca ceremony.

If you take prescription medication, have a cardiovascular condition, have a psychiatric condition, or have another significant medical concern, discuss participation with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before attending.

So, How Many Ayahuasca Ceremonies Should You Do?

The best answer is:

As many as you can responsibly experience and integrate—not as many as possible.

For someone experiencing ayahuasca for the first time, starting with one ceremony can provide valuable information about how their body and mind respond.

Some participants may then decide that a second experience is appropriate.

Others may realize that they need more time.

Neither choice is wrong.

Ayahuasca is not a race.

The purpose of a retreat should not be to collect as many ceremonies as possible. The purpose should be to create the right conditions for a meaningful, intentional, and responsible experience.

Choosing an Ayahuasca Retreat in Colombia

If you are traveling internationally for ayahuasca, the quality of the retreat environment matters.

Look beyond photographs and marketing.

Before booking, consider asking:

  • Who leads the ceremonies?

  • What is their tradition and experience?

  • How many participants are in each ceremony?

  • What happens if someone becomes physically or emotionally overwhelmed?

  • Is there experienced supervision throughout the ceremony?

  • What preparation information is provided?

  • What happens after the ceremony?

  • Is there time for rest and integration?

  • Are medical and medication considerations taken seriously?

  • What exactly is included in the retreat?

A responsible retreat should be transparent about these questions.

Experience Ayahuasca in Colombia

Colombia has a long history of traditional yagé use, and many international travelers come to the country looking for an experience connected to its cultural and ancestral traditions.

At Psychotravels, we focus on creating a traditional, intimate environment where participants can approach ayahuasca with preparation, respect, and intention.

Our retreat is located in the mountains outside Medellín, surrounded by nature and away from the intensity of the city.

Rather than treating ayahuasca as something to consume quickly, we encourage participants to approach the experience as a process.

Prepare. Experience. Rest. Integrate.

Because sometimes the question isn’t:

“How many ceremonies can I do?”

The better question is:

“How much time do I need to truly understand what this experience is showing me?”
